These hanging hand towels solve the problem of your hand towels constantly falling on the floor!
Plus, they’re super cute!
These towels are super fast and incredibly easy to make.
All you need is a little fabric, a button, some needle and thread, and the free pattern I’m sharing with you today!
Don’t want to print out the free pattern? That’s okay, too! You can easily draw up your own template for this project!
Bonus: I’m showing you how to sew your own simple hand towels, and how to hang them with a simple loop, too!
You can also watch me make these towels in my YouTube video.
Print out your free pattern below, then follow along with the step-by-step instructions below.
Step 1: Cut Your Fabric

First, you’ll want to cut out your fabric.
Trace your template over two layers of fabric, and cut your fabric.
You’ll need to cut out two pieces of fabric for this project.
If you’re transforming existing towels into hanging towels, this is all the cutting you’ll need to do!
If you’re sewing your own hand towels, I’ll talk about that at the bottom of the page, so scroll down there for some tips on how to do this!
Step 2: Sew

Next, lay your two pieces of fabric right sides together.
Sew all the way around, leaving the straight bottom edge OPEN.
Turn your piece right side out.
Step 3: Gather

Fold your towel in half.
Using a basting stitch, gather the folded edge of your fabric.
Step 4: Attach the Towel

Next, you’ll attach your hand towel to the hanging portion of the towel.
Place your folded gathered edge of your towel inside the hanging piece.
Fold in the raw edges of the hanging piece, and sew across, so that you are attaching your towel and hiding the raw edges on your hanging piece at the same time.
Top stitch around the hanging portion of your towel.
Step 5: Attach the Button

Lastly, attach a button to the front portion of your hanging towel.
Use your template as a guide for where to place the button on your hanging towel.
(If you’re not using the template, you’ll want to put it towards the bottom, thicker part of your hanging towel.)
Make a button hole at the top of your towel hanger.
Now you are able to wrap your hand towel around a towel rack and button it securely into place!
Bonus: Sewing Hand Towels

I wanted to take a moment to talk about sewing hand towels!
Sewing hand towels is such an easy, sustainable project for your home.
The fabric/patterns become endless, and if you use repurposed/secondhand fabric from the thrift store, it becomes and earth-friendly, extra thrifty project!
Make sure your fabric is 100% cotton (or linen), otherwise it will not be absorbent enough.
I make my hand towels about 18″ x 18″, and simply hem all the raw edges by folding my fabric over twice.

If I want to make a simple hand towel that can be hung on a hook, I use a bit of ribbon to make a loop, and sew the loop on one of the corners of the towel.

Happy sewing!
