Here’s an easy Easter Basket tutorial and Free Sewing Pattern to create your very own homemade Easter baskets!

This free printable pattern is for a square basket.

Print out your free Easter basket template at the bottom of the page.

This is an easy sewing project. If you can sew a straight line, you can accomplish this project!

(the only “not straight line” part is sewing on the felt bunny/name decorations on the outside of the basket — and you can omit those or sew them on by hand, as needed!)

Let’s get started making our very own Easter baskets! Keep reading for a complete sewing tutorial!

(and yes — you can find all the Easter sewing projects you see in the above picture on the blog as free patterns, too!)

Happy sewing!

Supply list:

  • Sewing machine
  • A hand sewing needle and thread (required)
  • Felt
  • Fusible interfacing or fusible fleece (optional — you can use felt instead if you wish)
  • Main fabric
  • Lining fabric/interior fabric
  • Scissors
  • Free Pattern (print at the bottom of the page!)

Step 1: Cut out your pattern!

First, print out your free PDF Sewing pattern (found at the bottom of the page).

Cut out your templates, then cut out your fabric and felt as indicated on each template piece.

Each side and the bottom of the basket has an exterior fabric pieces, an interior fabric piece, and something stiff to hold the shape of your basket that will be sandwiched on the inside of these two fabric pieces.

The stiff felt/interfacing piece will be a square — even for the house-shaped side pieces! Be sure to cut FIVE square pieces, not house-shaped pieces!

I have it marked to use felt for this stiff interior that will hold  your basket’s shape — it’s the most economical way, if you’ve purchased felt by the yard to use as the decorative rabbit/name portion of this basket and already have some extra on hand. Of course — fusible stiff interfacing/fleece will give a neater look to this basket in the end.

This tutorial will show how to use regular felt to create a stiff basket. If you’re using fusible interfacing, just be sure to iron it on before sewing your interior/exterior fabric pieces together!

Step 2: Sew the sides/bottom

Next, you’ll want to sew each individual side piece and the bottom piece.

Lay your exterior and interior fabric piece for each side right sides together. Then, lay the square shaped felt/interfacing piece on the top. (see pictures!)

Sew the sides and the triangular top of each side piece, using a 3/8″ seam allowance. Leave the straight edged bottom piece open.

Turn right side out, so that the lining pieces and outer fabric pieces are showing, and the stiff felt/interfacing is on the INSIDE of each piece.

Fold in your raw edges on the remaining open edge, and sew closed.

Repeat this same process for the bottom of the basket,  sewing around 3 edges of your basket bottom, turning right side out, and folding in the raw edges/sewing closed.

Use a hot iron to fold and iron down each of the triangular top pieces. This will give a nice decorative look to your basket.

If you want to sew on any felt decorations to the sides of your basket, now is the time to do so!

Decorate the sides of the basket with a felt Easter bunny or two, included in the templates. Templates for letters are also included so that you may add someone’s name to the basket, if you wish.

Cut any rabbits/letters out of felt, line them up straight on the sides of the basket, and top stitch them into place!

Step 3: Assemble the basket

To assemble the basket, get out your hand sewing needle!

We will be using a whip stitch to sew the basket pieces together.

First, sew the bottom of each side piece to the bottom of the basket.

Then, sew up each side of the basket.

Step 4: Sew the handles

To create handles on your basket, Fold a hem on each short end of your handle pieces.

Fold each handle pattern piece in half, length-wise.

Sew each piece on the long side only.

Use a safety pin to turn your handles right side out (as seen in picture!).

Iron flat, and top stitch your handles to keep them neatly shaped.

Fold each handle in half, and sew in in place to the sides of your basket.

You can use a sewing machine or a hand sewing needle to attach the handles — as long as the stitches are tight and secure, accounting for future wear and tear on your basket!

Fill up your basket with some handmade reusable fabric Easter eggs — free printable patterns can be found on my blog!
