Here’s a free cat sewing pattern that’s so easy to make!
This pattern is suitable for beginners.

Supply List:
- Flannel Fabric (only about 1/2 yard)
- A small amount of contrast fabric for the cat’s inner ears
- Wool to stuff your cat with
- A sewing machine AND a hand sewing needle/thread
- Yarn to embroider the eyes, nose, and mouth
- Tapestry needle for the yarn
Step 1: Cut everything out
Print out your templates.
(Find them at the bottom of this post!)
Most of your templates print out in one piece, but in order to fit your kitty cat’s nice long tail onto a sheet of standard sized printer paper, you will need to attach the two template pieces for the tail with a piece of tape.
Tape your tail right in the middle. The templates have guides to help you with this. Don’t worry, it’s very simple!
Fold your fabric in half, right sides together. This creates two layers of fabric.
Trace your pattern pieces onto your two layers of fabric and cut them out.
You will need to cut out:
- 2 Head pieces
- 2 Body pieces
- 2 Arm pieces
- 2 Leg pieces
- 2 Tail pieces
- 2 Main fabric ear pieces
- 2 Contrast fabric ear pieces
Once you have all your pieces cut out, it’s time to start sewing!
Step 2: Start Sewing!
Using a sewing machine (preferred, but not necessary) and a 3/8″ seam allowance, sew each body piece right side together.
Leave each marked dotted edge on your pattern template unsewn/open, and leave the tops of the arms, legs, and tail open.
For the ears, you will want to sew one main fabric piece and one contrast fabric piece right sides together to create an ear. (make 2 ears!)
Step 3: Stuff with wool
Next, turn all of your pieces right side out.
Fill each piece with wool — except for the ears.
If you want to stuff your ears, you can. I did not stuff my cat’s ears.
Don’t fill your arms and legs to the very tippy top while stuffing with wool. Leaving a little bit of empty space will help keep your cat’s limbs nice and mobile!
For the arms and the tail, fold the raw edges at the open top INSIDE to hem them, then sew across.
Step 4: Assembly
Now it’s time to assemble your cat!
First, stick the legs (toes out!) inside the bottom (wider end) of the cat’s body.
Fold the raw edges INSIDE the cat’s body to hem them, and sew across to secure the legs.
Next, sew the head onto the top of the body with a hand sewing needle.
Fold the raw edges inside and sew across using a ladder stitch or little whip stitch.
(Make sure the side seams on both the head and the body are lined up!)
Next, use a hand sewing needle to attach the arms to the sides of the body.
Use your hand sewing needle to attach the tail to your cat’s back.
Lastly, hand sew the cat’s ears onto the top of your cat’s head. Fold the raw edges to the inside of your cat’s ears as you sew.
Tip: While hand sewing stuffed animals, leave long tails ends of thread at the beginning and end of your seams. After tightly knotting, rethread each long tail end with your sewing needle, and pull the thread inside your cat’s body so that the threads are not seen. Doing your finish work this way makes for tight, long-lasting stitches, as well as makes your work look a bit neater than just cutting your thread short.
Step 5: Embroider your cat’s face
Before embroidering your cat’s face, take a pencil and very lightly mark where you want your cat’s face to go, and how you want it to look.
Erase anything you don’t like. Play around with it until you see something you like!
Take your time with this part — you’ll thank yourself when you’re finished!
Use yarn and a tapestry needle to embroider your kitty cat’s face.
When you’re finished, use your needle to pull your long ends of thread inside your cat’s body to hide and secure them.
I went back and forth many times trying to decide if I wanted to attach whiskers to my cat. What did you decide for your cats? Whiskers or no?
