Shroomling: Knit Mushroom Creature — FREE Knitting Pattern!

Celebrate FALL by welcoming this sweet little mushroom into your home! Come along and knit this quick and easy afternoon knitting project using my free knitting pattern!

Festively Fall, this little knit mushroom creature is ready to find its way into your home!

Using only small remnants of yarn and simple to make, this little shroomling can be worked up in one cozy afternoon!

Supplies Needed:

Stitches Used:

  • Knit
  • Purl
  • KFB (knit front and back)
  • SSK (slip slip knit)
  • K2TOG (knit two together)
  • P2TOG (purl two together)
  • K3TOG (knit three together)

Note: Although I used what is technically bulky yarn, I feel that the “bulky” Wonderfluff yarn I used should really be classified more as a worsted weight yarn. In other words — if you use all worsted weight yarn for this project, it should all turn out just fine.

Let’s get straight to it!

Step 1: Shroomling Hat TOP

Take out your 3.75 mm circular knitting needles (that’s size 5 for y’all in the states), and bulky (or use worsted for this whole project, see note above) yarn.

I used “black cherry heather” (or a red hue) for the top of the hat.

Cast on 25 stitches. Slip to join, leaving a grand total of 24 stitches on your needles.

Split those 24 stitches in half.

(You should have 12 stitches on each needle.)

Round 1: Knit

Round 2: Knit

Round 3: Knit

Round 4: Knit

Round 5: Knit

Round 6: Knit

Round 7: Knit

Round 8: Knit

Round 9: SSK, Knit to last 2 stitches, K2TOG. Repeat on second needle. (20 stitches left on needles)

Round 10: Knit

Round 11: SSK, Knit to last 2 stitches, K2TOG. Repeat on second needle. (16 stitches left on needles)

Round 12: Knit

Round 13: SSK, Knit to last 2 stitches, K2TOG. Repeat on second needle. (12 stitches left on needles)

Use the kitchener stitch to bind off for a nice clean finish.

Or — if you’re looking for something a little simpler, bind off, and sew the top closed. No one needs to know.

Step 2: Shroomling Hat BOTTOM

For the bottom of the hat, we’ll keep using our 3.75mm circular knitting needles and bulky yarn.

I used white (“bare wonderfluff”) for the bottom.

Cast on 25 stitches, slip to join (24 stitches total).

Round 1: Knit

Round 2: (Knit 2, K2TOG) repeat all the way around. (18 stitches left on needles)

Round 3: Knit

Round 4: (Knit 1, K2TOG) repeat all the way around. (12 stitches left on needles)

Round 5: Knit

Round 6: (K2TOG) repeat all the way around. (6 stitches left on needles)

Round 7: Knit

Round 8: (K2TOG) repeat all the way around. (3 stitches left on needles)

Round 9: Slip stitches to one needles. Knit 3 together. Cut yarn and secure.

Assembly: To assemble your little shroomling top hat, first use your white yarn to embroider some dots on the TOP of the hat.

Next, stuff the top of the hat lightly.

Lastly, sew on the bottom of the hat, making some nice dramatic stitches to make an intriguing bottom (see photo above).

Don’t forget to weave in all your yarn ends!

Set aside your little mushroom hat.

Step 3: Knit the Shroomling’s BODY

Moving onto the BODY piece!

Both the head and the body are worked as ONE piece.

Simply switch colored yarns for the body and the head.

Using the same sized circular needles (3.75mm), cast on 9 stitches, and slip to join. You will have 8 stitches on your needles.

We’re starting at the top of the head, so use whatever color yarn you want the head to be. (I used white)

Round 1: (KFB, Knit 1) all the way around. (12 stitches on needles.)

Round 2: Knit

Round 3: (KFB, Knit 2) all the way around. (16 stitches on needles.)

Round 4: Knit

Round 5: (KFB, Knit 3) all the way around. (20 stitches on needles)

Round 6: Knit

Round 7: (K2TOG, Knit 3) all the way around. (16 stitches on needles)

Round 8: Knit

Round 9: (K2TOG, Knit 2) all the way around. (12 stitches on needles)

Round 10: Knit

Round 11: (K2TOG, Knit 1) all the way around. (8 stitches on needles)

Round 12: Knit — SWITCH TO BODY COLOR — (I used grey!)

Round 13: (KFB, Knit 1) all the way around (12 stitches on needles)

Round 14: Knit

Round 15: (KFB, Knit 2) all the way around. (16 stitches on needles)

Round 16: Knit

Round 17: (KFB, Knit 3) all the way around (20 stitches on needles)

Round 18: Knit

Round 19: (KFB, Knit 4) all the way around (24 stitches on needles)

Round 20: Knit

Round 21: (KFB, Knit 5) all the way around. (28 stitches on needles)

Round 22: Knit

Round 23: (K2TOG, Knit 5) all the way around (24 stitches on needles)

Round 24: Knit

Round 25: (K2TOG, Knit 4) all the way around. (20 stitches on needles)

Round 26: Knit

Round 27: (K2TOG, Knit 3) all the way around. (16 stitches on needles)

Round 28: Knit

Round 29: (K2TOG, Knit 2) all the way around. (12 stitches on needles)

Round 30: Knit

Round 31: (K2TOG, Knit 1) all the way around (8 stitches on needles)

Round 32: Knit

Round 33: (K2TOG) all the way around. (4 stitches left on needles)

Round 34: K2TOG twice. (2 stitches left!)

Round 35: Move stitches to one needles, K2TOG and break yarn/secure.

Assembly: Stuff the head and body and sew up!

Weave ends of yarn deeply into the body so they aren’t noticed.

Step 4: Shroomling FEET

Give your shroomling some feet to hobble into your home!

Still using those 3.75 mm circular needles…

Grab the color you want for your shroomling’s feet!

Cast on 13 stitches and slip to join. This will leave you 12 stitches on your needle.

Divide those stitches evenly onto your two needles. (6 stitches on each needle)

Round 1: Knit

Round 2: Knit

Round 3: Knit

Round 4: Knit

Round 5: SSK, Knit 2, K2TOG. Repeat on the second needle. (8 stitches left on your needles)

Round 6: Knit

Round 7: Knit 1, K2TOG, Knit 1. Repeat on the second needle. (6 stitches left!)

Round 8: Knit

Round 9: K3TOG, K3TOG (2 stitches remaining)

Round 10: Move last two stitches onto one needles and K2TOG.

Break yarn and secure.

Assembly: Stuff with wool, sew up, and weave in your ends.

The POINTY ENDS of the feet represent the BACK of the foot/HEEL.

Step 5: Give your shroomling some ARMS!

Next up, some little arms for your little shroomling.

This way he can give you a little shroomling hug.

Quite important.

Just as before, we’re still using our 3.75 mm circular needles.

Grab your arm yarn!

Whatever color suits you. I chose white again. (or “bare wonderfluff,” if you’re looking to purchase the exact same)

Cast on 9 stitches and slip to join. This leaves 8 stitches on your needles.

Round 1 – 8: KNIT

Round 9: Knit 1, K2TOG, Knit 1. Repeat on second needle. (6 stitches remaining on your needles)

Round 10: K3TOG, K3TOG. (2 stitches left!)

Round 11: Move last 2 stitches to one needle and K2TOG.

Break yarn, secure.

Assembly: Stuff with yarn, sew up, and weave in your ends!

The “pointy end” represents the SHOULDER/TOP of the arm.

Step 6: Give your shroomling a nifty CAPE

Lastly, your little shroomling will need a cape.

(Don’t ask me WHY exactly he needs a cape. This is a well-kept secret in the shroomling world.)

For the cape, we will be switching to STRAIGHT NEEDLES.

Now then, taking out your 3.75 mm STRAIGHT needls, cast on 28 stitches.

Row 1: Knit

Row 2: Knit

Row 3: Knit

Row 4: Knit

Row 5: Knit 3, Purl 22, Knit 3.

Row 6: Knit 3, SSK, K2TOG, Knit 14, SSK, K2TOG, Knit 3. (24 stitches remaining on needle)

Row 7: Knit 3, Purl 18, Knit 3.

Row 8: Knit 3, SSK, K2TOG, Knit 10, SSK, K2TOG, Knit 3 (20 stitches remaining)

Row 9: Knit 3, Purl 14, Knit 3

Row 10: Knit 3, SSK, K2TOG, Knit 6, SSK, K2TOG, Knit 3 (16 stitches left on your needles)

Row 11: Knit 3, Purl 10, Knit 3

Row 12: Knit 3, SSK, K2TOG, Knit 2, SSK, K2TOG, Knit 3 (12 stitches remaining)

Row 13: Knit 3, Purl 6, Knit 3

Row 14: Knit 3, SSK, K2TOG, SSK, Knit 3 (9 stitches remaining on needle)

Row 15: Knit 3, Purl 3, Knit 3

Row 16: Knit 3, K3TOG, Knit 3 (7 stitches left!)

Rows 17 – 20: KNIT

Cast off. Embroider with white dots, and weave in your ends.

Assembling your Shroomling

Time to sew all the bits and pieces onto your shroomling to make him come to life!

Firstly, sew his hat onto the top of his head. Make that hat a little off center.

Embroider a little face.

Attach his arms — pointy side joining right at the neck!

Sew on his feet — pointy side pointing BACK

Lastly, sew on his little cape, the wider end at the bottom.
