Step 1: Print your Free Pattern
Print out your free pattern, then cut out each paper template piece!
The free pattern is found at the bottom of this page.
The PDF file will be emailed to you instantly and can be printed out from there!
Cut out each template piece.
Step 2: Cut your fabric
Trace your templates over your fabric.
The letters will be traced over felt. I chose white felt, but you can choose whatever color you’d prefer!
While cutting out your letters, lay the templates FACE DOWN on your felt before tracing. This will leave any pencil marks on the BACKS of the letters where you can’t see them!
Make sure to cut out the “hollow” parts of each letter (such as “A” and “P”).
The triangular and rabbit banner pieces should be cut from lightweight cotton woven fabric.
If you’re looking to use up some fabric scraps, these banner pieces can be cut out of colorful scrap fabrics!
If you’re using scraps, consider choosing pink, yellow, and green fabrics to really give a festive Easter look!
You can also use your favorite scraps of fabric for the main fabric, and use other fabric scraps for the backs of your fabric flags.
You can use a rotary cutter for the triangular banner pieces if you’d prefer. I just used scissors.
The quantity for each amount of templates to cut out is written out on each template piece.
Step 3: Sew Your Triangle Banner Pieces
Next, you’ll want to sew your triangle banner pieces.
With right sides together, sew each of your triangular banner pieces.
Leave the short straight edge of each triangle OPEN.
Turn out each triangle, and fold the open raw edge to the inside of the triangle.
Be sure to push out each side seam!
Iron flat. Use a hot iron.
Sew closed while top stitching all the way around your triangular banner pieces.
Step 4: Sew Your Bunny Pattern Pieces
The rabbit banner pieces will be assembled similarly to the triangle banner pieces.
Sew your rabbit banner pieces right sides together, leaving a small opening at the bottom of the rabbit to turn right side out.
When turning your rabbits right side out, the ears need to be turned out FIRST.
To do this, take your hand sewing needle and some thread and tie a knot at the tip of your rabbit ear, in the seam allowance.
Stick your needle INSIDE the rabbits ear close to where your knot is, sandwiched between the two layers of fabric.
Use your needle and thread to PULL your ears right side out first.
Once you’ve begun pulling the ears with your needle and thread, it is helpful to use a chopstick or something similar to give the ear a little push. (see photos)
Once you have pulled out the ears, turn the rest of your bunny right side out.
Iron flat, folding the bottom of the bunny (the remaining raw edge) inside to create a hem.
Top stitch all the way around your bunny.
Step 5: Sew the letters onto the banner
Next, you will need to take your felt letters and top stitch them onto each banner pieces.
Lay out all your banner pieces with the letters on top. This is your chance to play around with how you want your banner to look! Think about any patterns that you want, etc.
Once you have decided how you want your banner to look, Sew each letter onto the triangular banner pieces.
Step 6: Attach banner pieces to ribbon
Lastly, it’s time to attach your banner pieces together!
I used the corners of each triangular banner pieces to closely sew together the words “Happy” and “Easter.”
Between the words “Happy” and “Easter,” I attached a little bit of ribbon to allow for a space between the two words.
I also used a bit or ribbon at the beginning and end to attach the rabbits to the beginning and end of the banner.
And of course — I attached ribbon to each end for be able to hang the banner up for decorative use!
Sew the ribbon onto the BACK of your banner whenever you use the ribbon.
And — either sew or glue the raw ends of the ribbon so that it does not fray over time! (hint — you can use a hot glue gun to keep the edges from fraying!)
