Free Knitting Pattern for Hat and Scarf

Enjoy this free knitting pattern for how to make a knitted bonnet with an attached scarf to tie it together. This knitting pattern ranges in sizes baby to adult!

I love this style hat plus scarf, and have been making it for my children for years.

Who else has the issue of hats never staying on their children’s head? (Just me?)

Well, this hat has an attached scarf to it, so not only does it stay on your child’s head MUCH better, it also adds extra warmth!

As my husband always says, we’re an “outside family.”

We love the outdoors and spend a lot of time there!

And, living on a farm means lots of animals to take care of in ALL seasons!

So, extra super-duper warm clothing is a MUST around here!

I’ve lovingly called this style hat a babushka, as it’s reminiscent of Russian style headscarves worn in very cold winters!

I knit this hat in the younger child size.

(Obviously, please use common sense when dressing scarves on children and babies. I would never let my babies or children be wrapped up in a snugly warm scarf outside of my eyesight! And, I would never tightly tie a scarf on any of my babies/kids!)

Supply List:

Here’s what you’ll need to make this babushka!

• Worsted weight yarn (weight 4)
• 4.5mm straight knitting needles (US 7)
• Tapestry needle for sewing together your final knitted pieces
• Scissors for snipping your yarn!

This bonnet comes in multiple sizes: Baby, Toddler, Younger Child, Older Child, and Adult.

The bonnet has a “seed stitch and stripes” pattern to it — the seed stitch border around the edges, and some fun textured “stripes” throughout. This style appears in both the bonnet piece and the scarf pieces, keeping everything cohesive!

There are variations you can make with this hat — for instance, for an adult sized bonnet, I would probably double how wide the scarf pieces are (cast on 40 stitches instead of 20!). It really comes down to your own preference!

All sizes are listed in the pattern below. The first number is for the baby size. The numbers in parenthesis are (Toddler, Younger Child, Older Child, and Adult).

For the Bonnet/Hat:

With 4.5mm STRAIGHT knitting needles and worsted weight yarn, cast on 70 (80, 90, 100, 110) stitches.

Row 1: (K1, P1) repeat this pattern to the end.

Row 2: (P1, K1) repeat this pattern to the end.

Row 3: (K1, P1) repeat this pattern to the end.

Row 4: (P1, K1) repeat this pattern to the end.

Row 5: (K1, P1) repeat this pattern to the end.

Row 6: (P1, K1). repeat this pattern to the end.

Next, work in the following stripe pattern 5 (6, 7, 8, 9) total times.

Stripe Pattern:

Row 1: (K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1), Knit to last 6 stitches, (K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1).

Row 2: (P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1), Purl to last 6 stitches, (P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1).

Row 3: (K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1), Knit to last 6 stitches, (K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1).

Row 4: (P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1), Purl to last 6 stitches, (P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1).

Row 5: (K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1), Knit to last 6 stitches, (K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1).

Row 6: (P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1), Purl to last 6 stitches, (P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1).

Shape the Back of hat

Now, we’ll work on shaping the back of the bonnet. This is the part of the bonnet that will lay on the back of your head.

Row 1: (Knit 8, SSK, Knit 8, K2TOG) work in pattern to end.

Row 2: Purl

Row 3: (Knit 7, SSK, Knit 7, K2TOG) work in pattern to end.

Row 4: Purl

Row 5: (Knit 6, SSK, Knit 6, K2TOG) work in pattern to end.

Row 6: Purl

Row 7: (Knit 5, SSK, Knit 5, K2TOG) work in pattern to end.

Row 8: Purl

Row 9: (Knit 4, SSK, Knit 4, K2TOG) work in pattern to end.

Row 10: Purl

Cast off.

Scarves

Make two scarves to attach and each side of the bonnet.

You can knit them as long as you’d like them to be — just be sure they are the same size!

Cast on 20 stitches for the scarf (you may wish for the scarf pieces to be wider, especially for an adult size. Double or so the cast on stitches if you want a wider scarf!).

Work in your stripe pattern (seen above) until you reach your desired length.

Then, for the final 6 rows of your scarves, work in seed stitch.

Seed Stitch for final 6 rows of scarves

Row 1: (K1, P1) repeat this pattern to the end.

Row 2: (P1, K1) repeat this pattern to the end.

Row 3: (K1, P1) repeat this pattern to the end.

Row 4: (P1, K1) repeat this pattern to the end.

Row 5: (K1, P1) repeat this pattern to the end.

Row 6: (P1, K1). repeat this pattern to the end.

Cast off your scarf. Make a second scarf piece the same length as your first.

Assembly for hat and scarf

To assemble your bonnet, first turn the hat portion inside out.

Use a tapestry needle and matching yarn to sew up the back.

You want to sew up the entire back side you shaped — the long straight edge on the back, and the smaller diagonal line — right up to where your seed stitch border starts/ends.

Once you’ve sewn the back of your bonnet, turn your bonnet right side out.

With right sides together, use your tapestry needle and matching yarn to sew on the scarves.

You want one scarf on each side, meeting the bottom front corner where the face is, and ending closer towards the “side middle” of the bonnet.
