Let’s get right to it!
Supplies Needed:
- Fabric — I used a medium/heavy weight corduroy.
- Wool to stuff your pig with
- A sewing machine (optional)
- A hand sewing needle and thread(required)
- Scissors
- A small amount of black yarn and a tapestry needle
- A small amount of 1/4″ wide elastic
- Free printable sewing pattern found at the bottom of the page!
- Tape to piece together your paper pattern pieces
Step 1: Assemble Your Pattern Pieces
When you print your pattern pieces, you’ll notice they need to be assembled first.
This enables the pattern to be printed from any home computer.
After you’ve printed your pattern pieces, tape them together as seen in the photo below.
Each assembled piece in the photo below is numbered in RED so you can better see what order the pieces should be taped in.
Use the dotted lines as guides while connecting your pattern pieces.
When you cut out your fabric, you will use the SOLID lines as your guide, not the dotted lines.
Use clear tape to connect your pattern pieces.
Step 2: Cut out your pattern pieces
Next, use your assembled pattern pieces to cut out your pattern.
I used a medium/heavy weight cotton corduroy fabric.
I’d share a link with you as to where I got it, but it was gifted to me from someone who has had it in her closet for at least 20 years.
For cutting multiple pattern pieces, fold your fabric in half before tracing and cutting your fabric.
This will give you “opposite” facing pattern pieces, which you’ll need for this project.
You will need:
- 2 Sides
- 1 Rump
- 1 Top
- 1 Belly
- 1 Tail (and 1 piece of elastic)
- 4 Ears
- 4 Back Feet
- 4 Front Feet
- 2 Snouts
Note that the elastic should be cut to the measurement as indicated right on the tail pattern piece.
Step 3: Attach the Top to the Rump
First you will want to sew the top to the rump.
Find the center of the top of the rump and lightly mark it on the backside with a pencil.
Find the center bottom of the WIDE end of the rump and lightly mark it on the back with a pencil.
Place each piece right side together, the centers lining up perfectly.
Sew into place with a 1/4″ seam allowance.
Sew slowly — making sure that you maintain a 1/4″ seam allowance the entire time, keeping the straight edge of the top lined up neatly against the curved edge of the rump.
Step 4: Sew the Sides
Once you’ve sewn the top to the rump, you’ll want to sew the sides to the top and the back of the body.
Start at the back feet on both the side of the pig and the rump of the pig, using a 1/4″ seam allowance.
Line up the bottoms of the back feet, and sew right sides together up to where the rump meets the top of the pig.
Repeat for both sides.
Then, continue sewing the top sides to the top of the pig, right sides together.
Step 5: Sew the Belly of the Pig
Once the sides, rump, and top are all attached, sew the belly of the pig.
Use a 1/4″ seam allowance.
With right sides together, start sewing the back edge of the belly of the pig to the back legs/bottom of the rump.
Start at one back leg and sew all the way to the other back leg.
Then, sew each side together, leaving the bottoms of the feet OPEN.
Lastly, sew each front edge of the front feet together all the way to the opening for the snout.
Again, you will be leaving the bottoms of the feet OPEN, and the snout OPEN.
Step 6: Sew the Bottoms of the Feet
Next, we’ll attach the bottom of the feet to the pig.
You’ll attach the bottoms of the feet while your pig is still inside out.
Attach the back feet and the front feet, maintaining a 1/4″ seam allowance.
Keep an even circular shape while attaching the bottoms of the feet to your pig.
Step 7: Stuff Your Piggy
Once you’ve assembled the main body of the pig, turn your pig right side out through the open snout.
Push out all the edges of your pig.
Stuff your pig through the open snout.
I used wool to stuff my pig.
I prefer wool to stuff toys with.
Wool is a wonderful natural materials that provides a great warmth and weight to the toy.
It also allows the animal to keep its shape for much longer than poly fiberfill does.
I stuffed my pig with wool from my sheep, but this is the wool I have always purchased in the past before I owned sheep!
Stuff your pig, and set it aside.
Step 8: Sew the Tail, Ears, and Snout
Once you have stuffed your pig, we’ll assemble the rest of the parts of your pig.
To assemble the tail, first hem the short ends of the tail.
Then, sew the long edge of the tail in half with a 1/4″ seam allowance.
Turn it right side out. A safety pin is helpful for this part. Attach the safety pin to one end of the tail and use it to push the tail right side out.
Cut yourself a piece of elastic (I used 1/4″), using the guide on the tail pattern piece as your measurement.
Use a safety pin to pull the elastic through the fabric tail. Sew securely on both ends.
The elastic will give your pig a nice curly tail.
Best of all, you can practically hear the tail just squealing “sproing!” each time you give it a tug!
For the ears, sew 2 pieces right sides together, turn them out.
Then, fold a hem inside the ear at the bottom to hide the raw edge.
Top stitch all the way around each ear with a 1/4″-ish seam allowance. Make sure you sew across the bottom to fold that hem into place!
Lastly — the snout.
Sew the two snout pieces right sides together.
Then, make a small slit on just ONE SIDE of the snout.
Use that tiny hole to pull the snout right side out.
Step 9: Adding the Final Touches
Trim any excess fabric around the open snout of your pig.
Put the “hole” side of your snout towards the inside of your pig so that it is not seen.
Tucking in the raw edges around the snout of your pig, use a hand sewing needle to sew the snout onto your pig.
Sew the ears to your pig, at about “shoulder length,” or lining them up with the front legs of your piggy.
Sew the tail to the back. Sew the tail on especially strongly, because his tail is absolutely irresistible to tug on.
Using black yarn and a tapestry needle, embroider two eyes and two nostrils onto your pig.
Knot your yarn tightly, and leave long tails of yarn.
Rethread those long tail ends of yarn with your needle, and draw them far into the pig’s body to hide them. This keeps the yarn especially secure.
