How to knit baby booties: FREE Easy knitting pattern!

Free Knitting Patterns for knit booties!

Free pattern for garter stitch these adorable booties — the size of the booties range from 0-3 months all the way up to 2T-3T!

Ditch the complicated patterns! These bootie patterns are a basic pattern that use straight knitting needles and easy stitches and techniques!

Find the pattern below, complete with photographed and easy to follow step-by-step instructions.

These easy knitted baby booties accommodate knitters of any skill level and are so much fun to make!

They’re a great baby shower gift — new parents will appreciate a sweet handmade gift for their sweet new baby!

A great one-skein project — if you’ve already made a baby blanket and have leftover yarn, why not make a pair of matching baby booties to go with it? These booties do not take much time to make!

Make sure you’re following the right size pattern — I have written out individual patterns for each size. This pattern comes in sizes 0-3 months (a great newborn size with a little extra room to grow), 6 months, 12-18 months, and 2T – 3T.

Making these for a new baby with an older, toddler aged sibling? It’s a great idea to make two pairs — a pair for the baby, and a larger pair in the toddler size so that baby’s  older sibling can match!

These also make great soft soled shoes, which are better for baby’s development (and toddler’s development!) when learning to walk. I’ve attached leather to the bottoms of the larger sizes, making this a great gift for parents who are on the “barefoot shoe” trend. Using 100% wool and real leather (all linked below!) is sure to please any more naturally-minded parent, too!

Supply List:

  • 3.75 mm needles
  • Worsted Weight yarn (I used yarn from Knit Picks)
  • A tapestry needle and scissors
  • (optional) leather for bottoms of booties (find it here — I bought the 8″x12″ option in “dark brown” for $8 to make multiple booties with, but if you’re making just one pair, the 6″x12″ option for $6 should work just fine!
  • (optional) Hammer, nail, and scrap wood for creating holes in leather soles for sewing

Assembly:

You’ll notice that at the bottom of the foot, each edge naturally curves/shapes UPWARDS to create the sides of each baby bootie.

This will give each pair of baby booties a nice shape once sewn together.

When you sew your booties together, you’ll want to sew AGAINST the booties’ natural shape — that is, right sides together. Then, when the booties have been sewn together, you’ll turn them right side out and the shape should “pop out” quite nicely.

Start sewing the back of the bootie (the foot/heel), making sure your bootie stays nice and straight so that it doesn’t look crooked when you are finished.

Then, start at the top of the foot and sew all the way up to where you want the ankle hole to end. Remember that a more snug fit will help prevent baby from kicking those booties off!

The top of the bootie is where your seam will be, preventing any uncomfortableness on the bottom of baby’s foot in the larger “walking” sized shoes especially.

You can use a mattress stitch, whip stitch, ladder stitch.. it is really your preference. Just be sure you use the same yarn you used to knit your booties so your stitches blend in nicely.

Fold the cuffs of each bootie down, and use a tiny stitch to secure them into a downwards position.

To attach leather bottoms (optional)

These Knit baby booties patterns have the option of adding a leather sole to the bottom of each bootie.

If your little one is walking, this will add some extra protection for their feet, while still allowing their feet to be mobile (better for baby’s development than hard-soled shoes!).

For this, you’ll need a piece of leather, some scissors, a hammer and nail, a scrap piece of wood, a tapestry needle (metal, and as slender as you can find) and some matching yarn.

I used real leather for this project (to keep in with using all natural materials, from the 100% wool yarn to the real leather, I’m happy to know what materials are touching my babies feet!).

Since I needed only a small amount of leather, I only paid around $7 to add on this detail, with plenty left over! You can find it here!

Cut your leather soles to shape.

Trace on the fuzzy side of the leather so that your pencil markings won’t show on the final product, and so it won’t be a big deal if you change your mind what shape you want the sole to be before cutting it out.

Hold your baby bootie up to the leather several times before cutting your leather. “Measure twice, cut once!”

You might choose not to use your sewing scissors for this project if you’re particular about only using fabric with your sewing scissors, but I just used my sewing scissors anyway.

You’ll want to give your scissors a good sharpening before and after cutting the leather, no matter what type of scissors you use!

Once you have cut your leather out, put the leather sole (one piece at a time!) onto a piece of scrap wood.

Use a pen or pencil to mark little dots all around the sole where you want your stitches to go. (or eyeball it!)

Don’t get too close to the edge, or your stitches may come undone, but don’t get too far away, otherwise you’ll have a little lip around the edge of the leather that may cause your little to trip!

Use a hammer and nail to tap holes where you want each of your stitches to go.

Hammer one side of the leather, then flip your leather over and hammer in the same holes on the other side. This will help your holes be large enough for the tapestry needle and yarn to go through.

Then, use a tapestry needle and matching yarn to sew through the holes in the leather to the bottom of the shoe.

You’ll want the fuzzy side of the leather facing the bootie (the fuzzy side WON’T be visible in the final product).

If possible, sew around the sole TWICE to be sure it’s attached firmly, ready for lots of toddler use!

If your needle struggles too much working its way through the leather, try hammering with a thicker nail to make the holes a bit bigger, or just sew around once.
