Supply List

For this sewing project, you will need:

  • Fabric (I used soft flannel)
  • Wool to stuff your bird with
  • A sewing machine
  • A hand sewing needle/thread
  • Small amount of yarn for the eyes
  • Tapestry needle to sewing yarn onto bird for eyes
  • Your free sewing pattern found at the bottom of this page

Step 1: Cut out your pattern pieces

Print out your pattern.

In order for this pattern to be printed on a standard home printer, the larger templates are broken up into several pieces.

These larger templates will need to be cut out and taped together before you can begin using them.

The templates are numbered in the correct order of assembly. Use the marked dotted lines as your guide.

Once you have taped together your templates, trace them onto your fabric.

For the body of the bird, if you’d like a different beak color, first sew (right sides together) some beak colored fabric onto your body colored fabric, right where the beak will be.

Lay your bird body template down on your fabric to determine where to sew your two pieces of fabric together.

Make sure to repeat this process so that you can cut the bird template through 2 layers of fabric.

Use the photos in this portion of this tutorial as a guide for how to do so.

Use a pencil to trace your templates onto your fabric.

Cut your patterns through two layers of fabric so that there is a “right side” and a “wrong side” for each piece.

Step 2: Sew and Stuff

After you have cut out all of your pattern pieces, sew them right sides together.

Use a 1/4″ seam allowance for all of this sewing project.

Keep the marked dotted line portions open as needed so that you have a place to stuff your bird.

Leave the bottom of the bird’s belly open for a place to attach his legs.

Turn all your pieces right side out.

Stuff your pieces with wool.

You can use whatever fiberfill you choose. Wool is my favorite as it’s warm, natural, heavy, and keeps the toy’s shape for a very long time.

Loosely stuff the wing pieces and legs, leaving empty space at the top, otherwise your bird will not be floppy, but quite stiff instead.

The empty space at the tops of the wings and legs is what gives your bird mobility.

Sew the tops of the wings closed, folding down the raw edges inside each wing.

Step 3: Assemble your bird.

To assemble your bird, first put the tops of the legs inside the open bottom of the body.

Space the legs as you would like them to look, then fold the raw edges of the bird’s belly inside the bird before sewing shut.

Use a hand sewing needle to sew each wing onto the bird’s body.

Leave the ends of your thread nice and long while hand sewing. Rethread the ends of your thread with a hand sewing needle and weave them deeply inside the bird’s body before snipping them short.

This will give your stitches added strength and longevity.

Use a tapestry needle and yarn to embroider eyes onto your bird. Again, keep the tail ends LONG and use your needle to hide them inside the body.
