Baby Hat to knit: how to knit a baby hat, baby hat pattern free!
This baby hat knitting pattern is free! This pattern makes a hat sized 6-12 months, and thanks to a nice wide ribbed edge, is super stretchy and will allow extended use before baby outgrows it.
Gifting someone a baby hat is a great new baby gift!
Practical and meaningful, it’s sure to bring a smile to the recipient’s face.
This hat was made in honor of the impending birth of my unborn nephew.
I prefer to give new baby gifts in sizes larger than newborn.
Firstly, my husband’s family seems to have the “big baby” gene, most babies being born close to 10lbs.
Secondly, everyone seems to give gifts in the newborn size, leaving the parents with not much in larger sizes for their new little one.
Lastly, it’s much easier to get extended use from an article of clothing that’s a tad too large, as opposed to something that’s on the small side.
So, this hat is sized approximately 6-12 months.
Circular needles are used, so there is no sewing seams at the end.
The ribbing is extra thick, giving the hat plenty of stretch and grip! (very helpful in a baby hat!)
And of course, there’s a cute pointed tip at the top, adding some sweet character to the baby hat.
And now — let’s get right to it!

Step 1: Ribbing and Bottom of Baby Hat
First we will work on the ribbing, and shaping the bottom of the baby hat.
Taking our 3.0mm circular knitting needles, cast on 93 stitches and slip to join (leaving 92 stitches on your needles).
Divide those stitches evenly onto your two needles — 46 stitches on each needle.
Place your stitch marker, and move it with each new round.
