Here’s a last minute baby shower gift that is suitable for even the absolute beginner!

(No worries if you forgot a gift! I made this baby bonnet the afternoon before I had to gift it at a baby shower!)

This is a very easy knitting pattern.

If you can do the following three stitches, you can make this bonnet!

Stitches used:

  • Knit
  • Purl
  • K2TOG (knit two stitches together)

The bonnet is snuggly warm, too, with bulky weight yarn!

The size for this baby bonnet is 0-12 months. Great for baby’s whole first year!

Let’s get right to it!

Supplies needed:

  • Bulky weight yarn
  • 6 mm straight knitting needles
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

Baby Bonnet pattern — let’s begin!

First, we’ll knit the head piece of the bonnet as one piece.

With bulky yarn and size 6mm straight knitting needles, cast on 50 stitches.

Begin to knit the front of the bonnet, near the face.

Row 1: Knit

Row 2: Knit

Row 3: Knit

Row 4: Knit

Row 6: Knit

Row 7: Knit 6 stitches, purl to last 6 stitches, knit 6 stitches.

Row 12: Knit

Continue working in stockinette stitch (purl one row, knit the next), keeping the 6 stitches of a garter stitch boarder on each side until work measures 4″ long. In other words — keep repeating rows 7 – 12 until your knitted work is 4″ long.

Shape back of baby bonnet

Now we’ll begin shaping the back of the head.

There won’t be a garter stitch boarder for this portion. We’re now knitting the part of the bonnet that will be sewn together.

Row 1: (Knit 8 stitches, K2TOG) 5 times. (45 stitches left on needles)

Row 2: Purl

Row 3: (Knit 7 stitches, K2TOG) 5 times. (40 stitches left on needles)

Row 4: Purl

Row 5: (Knit 6 stitches, K2TOG) 5 times. (35 stitches left on needles)

Row 6: Purl

Row 7: (Knit 5 stitches, K2TOG) 5 times. (30 stitches left on needles)

Row 8: Purl

Row 9: (Knit 4 stitches, K2TOG) 5 times. (25 stitches left on needles)

Row 10: Purl

Row 11: (Knit 3 stitches, K2TOG) 5 times. (20 stitches left on needles)

Row 12: Purl

Row 13: (Knit 2 stitches, K2TOG) 5 times. (15 stitches left on needles.)

Cast off remaining 15 stitches.

Next — sew the back of your baby bonnet

Fold the baby bonnet right sides together.

(knitted sides on the inside)

Take out your tapestry needle and matching yarn.

Sew your cast off edge.

Then, sew the edge below your cast off edge until you reach your garter stitch border.

Secure your yarn tightly and weave in your ends.

Knitting the ties

Next we’ll knit some nice bulky warm ties for baby’s bonnet.

Cast on 50 stitches with your matching bulky yarn and size 6mm straight needles.

Knit 3 rows.

Cast off.

Make 2 ties!

Using your tapestry needle and matching yarn, sew the straps onto the bottom front edge of your bonnet.

Don’t forget to weave in all your ends!
